Kraemer Design Group

The Kraemer Edge

Kraemer Design Group is a leading, high-end architecture and interior design firm with nearly 20 years of experience in historic renovation and comprehensive architectural consulting.

Led by Michigan natives, principals Maureen and Robert Kraemer, KDG has built its success and reputation where our heart and mailing address lie, in Detroit. Yet, as a result of our passion for reviving and creating buildings in our city, we have gained national exposure and opportunities that have taken us from Woodward Avenue to Route 66.

We are the industry leader in outovation: combining highly technical industry experience with unparalleled creativity to create exclusive design solutions. Whether renovation or new construction, we explore the limits of every project to solve our clients’ needs in a clever, original and inspired way.

What We Do

Kraemer Design Group’s approach to commercial design involves flexibility in working with existing construction, knowing what can and should be kept and which areas can be changed or eliminated to allow for new growth. We strive for sensible solutions that incorporate sustainable design strategies. We aim for functional, engaging, impressive spaces that foster productivity. Attention to detail and extensive documentation paired with our fluid design approach set us apart from the rest.

Kraemer Design Group’s extensive experience in the multi-family residential market gives us the versatility to work on a multitude of projects, ranging from adaptive reuse of historic buildings to the design of newly constructed high-end residential units.

We possess the creativity, energy, depth and talent to make every multi-family residential project a unique response to our clients’ needs. We identify with the owner, anticipate the needs of the resident, encourage social interaction between neighbors and respect the context of the building within a community. Our designs set the tone for the space, yet allow for the addition of personal touches that will make it a home.

In the ever-changing hospitality industry, Kraemer Design Group has proven excellence in creating award-winning hotels and restaurants for major brands and developers around the country that fit brand standards and work with any budget.

We have experience with InterContinental Hotels Group – IHG (Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites), Hilton (Home2_Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Embassy Suites Hotels), Marriott (Renaissance Hotels, Courtyard Marriot, Fairfield Inn and Suites, TownePlace Suites, Residence Inn), Choice (Comfort Suites), and Starwood (Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft Hotels), as well as a variety of independently owned hotels.

KDG has also led the resurgence of the hospitality market in Detroit by completing the first “ground up” construction within the city in many years as well as recently completing the design of an Aloft Hotel in the historic David Whitney Building.

Engaging customers through visual merchandising is a science that is supported by the underlying architecture and design. Every retailer, even those that are part of national or global chains, needs a space acutely attuned to its individual product offerings and style. KDG takes the time to understand the brand identity, target clientele and staff vision before commencing on retail projects—whether they are new construction or renovations of spaces in complex urban buildings. Our team’s collaborative and technical approach to retail design ensures a custom everyday masterpiece.

Having completed more historic renovation projects in Detroit’s urban core than any other firm, Kraemer Design Group’s local expertise in adaptive reuse is unrivaled. Not only do we take the time to understand and research a building’s complete story, we even have a dedicated historian on staff to guide us through the process. We have successfully helped numerous clients apply for and receive critical historic tax credits and know the National Park Service requirements like the back of our hand.

KDG researches historical data through photo archives, databases, libraries and government plan rooms and fully investigates and documents the interior, both through field measurements and extensive photography. We also have experience dealing with hazardous materials remediation, common to all historic rehabilitation projects. Mechanical systems, incoming utilities, electrical components, structural analysis, vertical transportation, exiting requirements and overall building integrity are all examined.

Where We Do It

As designers, we know our physical space is also a defining factor in, and representation of, our culture. Our office is thoughtfully laid out in an open-concept format that fosters our studio approach to the design process and helps our staff creatively and effectively collaborate. The location of the office, overlooking a revitalized downtown that Kraemer Design Group was a significant part of, allows our staff to take pride in being part of a movement toward Detroit’s resurgence.

Our Uniqueness

Kraemer Design Group encourages a culture and uniqueness among architectural firms that we feel provides a creative atmosphere for our employees as well as those outside vendors that call on us. Our office environment provides for an open dialog where everyone has a respected opinion. Individuals outside the office are seen as resources to lend expertise as well as creativity to our services. In appreciation to our friends in the industry, KDG has hosted numerous after hour events within and outside of the office. Staff is likewise encouraged to attend industry related events that foster a sense of appreciation and wellbeing. KDG regularly employs interns from the University of Michigan, University of Detroit Mercy, and Lawrence Technological University. Several members of KDG serve on local community based boards as well.

News

Though we make a point of not making noise just for the sake of making noise, as industry leaders and subject matter experts on architecture and design we are routinely called upon by the media to share our insights with professional and consumer audiences. Our involvement in some of the most exciting and unique projects in downtown Detroit brings with it its own recognition and buzz in both local and national publications.

Our Team

Our team is composed of a diverse group of professionals with a variety of backgrounds, skillsets, talents and styles. Our people, like our projects, are eclectic, which enables us to present out-of-the-box ideas and a range of perspectives to the table.

But even the grandest visions or unique design concepts are incomplete without the technical skill and precision needed to bring them to life. In addition to being inspired, passionate and creative individuals, our architects, designers, project managers and staff historian are also well-trained experts in their specialties and held accountable for clean execution and consistent communication.

We pride ourselves on becoming a partner, team player and colleague to our clients – not a vendor, or contractor or consultant.
