The Kahn
The Kahn, originally named “New Center Building” was designed by Albert Kahn Associates and built in 1930-31. The eleven-story limestone-clad building was constructed as an Art Deco compliment to the nearby Fisher Building, completed three years prior. The building served as an office building with retail space on the ground floor for over eighty years. In 2018, KDG was hired as the historic preservationist, architect and interior designer for adaptive reuse of the building, converting the obsolete office space into residential apartments. Construction work started in 2019 and completed in 2021.
The Kahn comprises commercial space at the ground floor and basement and 206 apartments on the second through eleventh floors, including two-story penthouses on uppermost floors. Exquisite historic details have been preserved in the renovation. The building lobby illustrates an Art Moderne influence. The historic features include marble walls, a fluted ceiling with an integrated lighting design, intricate painted plaster, and bronze detailing.
The interior design of the apartments echoes the character of the historic lobby with bold contrasting flooring and brass finishes for the new fixtures. Geometries and patterns in the historic detailing in the lobby are replicated throughout the residential areas in the designs of the doors, mailboxes, and trim. Amenities include a fitness center, roof terrace, and diverse community spaces. Intramode, a wholly owned affiliate of KDG provided furniture and accessory procurement throughout the building.
