The Berdan Building
As the Architect, Interior Designer, Historic Consultant and Procurement Agent on The Berdan, Kraemer Design Group transformed a 1902 former wholesale grocery warehouse in downtown Toledo into 115 apartment units, parking and restaurant space. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the five-story structure spans an entire city block, and includes a south wing that bridges to the original coal-fired boiler room. The building is mainly constructed of orange-red brick and decorative terra cotta, as well as an impressive variety of arched windows that we replaced with historic-replica aluminum units. The interior is a timber structure with columns and solid-wood joist floors with exposed brick walls. As a more utilitarian building, the apartment units have a loft-type feel, with a unique two-story unit in the former boiler room.
