Shinola Hotel

Kraemer Design Group led a monumental effort to create a new Detroit landmark, the Shinola Hotel. The hotel includes a 129-room boutique hotel, innovative culinary concepts, curated retail, and private event spaces. This diverse program extends through a series of interconnected historic buildings and annexes encompassing an entire city block.

KDG was the Architect of Record on the project in charge of building design, coordinating all design consultants, and remaining intimately involved through construction to ensure that the high level of design standards were maintained. Additionally, KDG was the historic preservation consultant for the project as well as the lead life safety and code consultant. Throughout the process, the myriad of teams worked closely together to identify challenges, collaborate, and execute the project, with KDG in the middle to ensure it was done with the highest level of quality, care and efficiency.

In addition to the full-service restaurant, San Morello, The Shinola Hotel includes a cocktail bar, a coffee shop, an indoor beer garden bar with carry-out food, and a burger and ice cream shop. KDG worked closely with the F&B operator, NoHo Hospitality, and the food service consultant. As is often the case, the back of house spaces for Food & Beverage were limited on space and required close attention. Additionally, the Shinola project required several custom food service fixtures and pizza oven. The project’s schedule was aggressive, the accelerated work pace led to an early opening in December of 2018.
