The Ronald McDonald House is located on the 3rd floor behind the Kresge Eye Institute at the Detroit Medical Center. Upon walking off the elevator into the lobby and reception area, bright colors immediately great the guests. A cheerful atmosphere with the comforts of home were the basis of the furniture, fixture and equipment specifications for the house. To your left is a large open living area where families can gather to relax or socialize filled with pillows, bold artwork, a fireplace and televisions. Sometimes small children have to stay at the home while their brothers and sisters are in the hospital, the Redwings Sponsored Children’s and Team Room is filled with Red Wings colors, logos, and games. While sitting in the living area, parents can keep an eye on their activity through the etched glass window wall. The cafeteria provides a large counter height bar where volunteer groups and families prepare meals together and gather for support. A key element in the room is two community tables where guests can stay after and work with electrical and USB outlets built right into the table.
Each guest room was designed with an organic, light and bright color palette. Families need a place where they can retreat for peace and quiet. Rooms vary slightly to accommodate the different size families who may need to stay. After entering the room, the main focal point is the beds which are made up with pillows, a bright white duvet, with accent pillows, a bed scarf and skirt. Each room is complete with all the luxuries you would find in a brand hotel facility.
To complete the space, the staff offices carry the bright colored theme with large freestanding desks, storage credenza and natural light. In addition, a large conference room is now available for the Board to have their monthly meetings to discuss the house and fundraising events to keep this wonderful organization running for future families in need of support.
