Kraemer Design Group was given the design challenge of adapting a historic former water treatment plant in Grand Rapids into NTH Consultants’ office and lab facility. In what was the water filter gallery, KDG programmed over 9,500-square-feet into a combination of open offices, test labs and support functions. Utilizing the high bay spaces, a mezzanine level conference room was created nested within the structural truss work. Working with a subdued palette, the historic elements of the structure were expressed and aided in branding the space with NTH’s corporate identity, without overpowering the area. Simple industrial light fixtures and a logical grid tying the floor, walls and ceiling defined an overall understated, contemporary feel. The ceiling height was also captured to conceal mechanical units located above floating perforated metal grid ceilings in between skylights.
